Speaking, classes and workshops

 

 


Shane will create a dynamic workshop, class or talk based on the needs of your community or organization. Shane is available as a key-note speaker, and tailors a format that is suited to your audience. She presents and facilitates for groups of various sizes, including conferences and education panels. Attendees of Shane's workshops consist of parents, caregivers, educators and professionals.  Shane is a DOE approved vendor.

 

The Powerful Professional  / The Powerful Parent- Professionals can easily have work burnout. This class is offered as a class as well as a series. Professionals will learn various communication skills to be used with parents. Also covered are ways to communicate with children in ways that empower the child. Regardless the age of the child and the communication ability, all children have the ability to thrive. Integrating stress-management and communication tools will bring control in a professional’s workday.

 

Practical Social Emotional    (best introduced as series) Parents will be introduced to methods that will help them in daily living situations with children that behave inappropriately. They will learn when to be flexible and when to be rigid in setting limits and boundaries. Parents will learn techniques that will serve their specific child's challenges. They will fine tune behavior modification tools that authentically serve their family's framework to bring their child in society without being fearful of meltdowns and tantrums.

 

Play + Bonding = Successful Parents  are taught the different play theories for any age child. They will learn about impulse control and how to use a child’s negative behaviors to help them self-regulate, attend and generalize skills.

 

Transition to Pre-School - Parents who are brining their child to school for the first time, need support. This seminar covers ways to communicate and learn how to trust the process. A large part of this seminar is for Q&A. Parents need validation and to be heard. Professionals are limited on time they have to connect with parents. Parents can let emotions overwhelm them and lose focus on how to set their child up for success. Parents will leave this workshop feeling secure and trusting about their child's process in beginning their school years.

 

Punishment = The Old Paradigm in Parenting - Parents use this last resort in disciplining children. Parents will understand meaningful ways of teaching a child a lesson. Punishment does not teach a child; rather it separates the child from bonding with a parent. Attendees will learn positive parenting methods will have a child listening better at home and becoming responsible for their own actions.

 

Transitioning out of District 75 - "When did my child become an adult?" - This workshop explores acceptance, belief in reality, and expanding out of a parent’s comfort zone. Often times a parent will deny their feelings about their child growing older. We explore different ways to integrate inherence for an individual who is completing mandatory schooling.

 

Creating and Cultivating Community /Parents - This active workshop gives parents space to connect to one another in the most present way. They will experience tools to bring their minds and bodies connected and present. Many parents feel isolated. This is a non-judgmental and non-critical environment, where parents explore and see alternate perspectives for challenges where they feel stuck with their child.

 

Supporting Court Involved Youth Attendees of this workshop will learn about the mindset of children who are court involved. Emotionally challenged children operate from a place of fear and are disconnected from possibilities beyond their current circumstances. This is a dual workshop seminar. Attendees will engage in dialogue of pre-conceived mindsets that often trigger students involved in the court system.

 

Managing Special Education at Home this seminar is about the connection of parents, school and students. Attendees will learn about communication and how to understand the mindset of a child. Children are independent and utilize skills at school and there is a disconnect when using the same tools at home. This seminar will give parents space to see how their set belief systems at home may limit the same skills done in school. 

 

Sensory Integration - The Magical 5 Senses - Attendees (parents/professionals) are introduced to the idea that the over stimulation of certain environments deeply affect a child's ability to learn. We will explore different ways to choose and control outside stimuli to guide children towards homeostatic. Attendees will also learn practical ways of using the 5 senses to have a child relax. When a child is relaxed their brain is ready to learn.

 

Authentic Parenting - Parents often compare and judge their own parenting skills. This brings on big feelings of guilt, regret, shame, anger and fear. This workshop is about gaining tools to trust one's own instinct. Using Vygotsky's theories, parents will experience and explore their belief systems with gentle movement, and writing. Parents will be lead through a dialogue series to learn the core of their belief systems and become aware of conscious choices.

 

Bonding with a Special Child - Attendees (parents/professionals) will learn the importance of bonding with a child with special needs. Children with special needs have very intense systems in their bodies. To form a bond with a child with special needs is vital to invite them into a learning/teaching environment. We will discuss the aspects of "joining" from the Son-Rise program as well as floor time approaches.

 

Acceptance & Letting Go This special workshop is for parents to experience acceptance to where their child is at academically, socially, and emotionally. The child will grow and have capacity to learn more as soon as

the parent sees and accepts the child as exactly where they should be." This is a great workshop for parents in denial about their child's diagnosis and who are frustrated and have little patience for their child's process in learning.

 

Conscious & Mindful Parenting - Parents learn to be aware of how their belief systems that feel permanent affect their child. Attendees will learn how to communicate with family members about their child and how to handle confronting situations about their child.

 

The Spiritual IEP IEP's can be a valuable tool if used in a positive way. Often times a parent looks at the IEP as everything a child needs to do. It leaves them feeling sad and hopeless. If this IEP is used in a way that leave the parent feeling in control and is able to see that their child is taking steps to move forward. The child DOES move forward. Parents will be empowered to know how to use the IEP and not feel left out of the teaching team.

 

Stress Management and Mindfulness - (Parents/Professionals) Mindfulness is a great practice for anyone working with children. Children, whether they are verbal or non, are constantly communicating. During this workshop we will explore how using observation, caregivers can find ways to connect, teach and direct children towards learning and reaching their IEP goals. Mindfulness practices are useful for anyone working with children.

 

Whole Family Wellness This family workshop works within family framework to have everyone be a part of the learning team. When a child is diagnosed, or presents with challenges, all the "work" is put upon that child. The diagnosis or challenge affects the whole family, not just the child. This workshop can be a seminar or along with a child's teaching team. Everyone’s belief systems are brought to the table, and each person leave knowing plans of action for the child, as well as when and how to ask for assistance.

 

Coping Skills for the Special Caregiver - Parents/caregivers and professionals- this focuses on how to take care of one-self with ease and how to incorporate these methods every day. The purpose of caring for the caregiver results in caring more effectively for a child. We use beginner yoga, breathing, and centering techniques that do not require getting on the floor or any outside materials. Attendees will walk away with actual tools that can be accessed anytime.

 

Healthy Disciplining the Special Child - (parents and professionals) Children with special needs must have the most consistent disciplining. This workshop will share different racial methods of healthy disciplining that work. Many times when working with children with special needs there are warnings given. If the warnings are not specific or consistent the professional or parent will lose the power they have to connect to the child. Attendees will leave this workshop with specific methods to use to get children to listen, focus and attend.

 

Behavior modifications - This seminar shares different tools to use to get children to reach IEP goals as well as to manage behavior. They can be used anywhere. We will discuss, token economies, visual schedules and contracts. We will cover when and how to use planned ignoring and how to enforce and introduce adaptive living skills.

 

Stress Management (for parents and professionals). Mindfulness based stress reduction has been shown to enhance the immune system, improve healing and overall well-being. Learn simple relaxation techniques and breathing exercises to help manage daily challenges, to sleep better and to relax. Participants will learn simple movement practices to reduce physical discomfort and practical methods to connect the mind and body.

 

Emotionally Charged Children - In this workshop/seminar we will cover different schools of thought on children with high emotions. Attendees will learn different mindsets and how to decipher "what’s really going on" when children act out or "misbehave."

 

Sibling Relationships - This class if for parents of multiple children households. Parents will learn the importance of spending time in specific ways with each child. They will learn communication skills to foster relationships within the already created family dynamic.

*Powerful Parenting- Parents can be intimidated through the process of getting evaluated for their IEP.

This class is bout parent empowerment. It prepares parents for IEP meetings, for asking for what they want and being an overall advocate for their child.

 

Family Yoga and Meditation - Families can practice yoga and meditation as a method of bonding and uniting on the same page. This style of yoga creates a safe space for mind body connection. The practice is based on Yoga for The Special Child ©

 

Capturing Creativity - (parent/professionals) All children are creative. A caregiver can foster this creativity by observing and tuning in to a child. Boosting a child's self esteem is vital when getting a child to learn and integrate in society. Often times a child does not know their gifts unless they are brought to their attention with positive reinforcement. Each attendee will explore their own gifts and dialogue on how they might find a child's. Attendees will be lead through practices on several creative methodologies.
